Now we're on stage as husband and wife: Aishwarya Rai

Back for 2 days in Mumbai Aishwarya Rai unwinds with Subhash K Jha.

It seems jetlag was invented for you and Abhishek.
Ha! I grabbed this opportunity to come back home because Abhishek had to attend an event. I came back to see my father. That's been a gnawing concern all through ever since my father fell ill.

The first couple of the Unforgettable shows were really difficult because I didn't get enough time to rehearse. But after that…it's been fantastic.

In spite of the fact that you couldn't rehearse enough?
I was ill for three weeks before we left. I've never been so ill in my life. I was on antibiotics throughout. I barely had five days to rehearse before we left. Only I know what it took for me to look chipper at the press conference.

How could you dance after getting up from your illness?
The first two shows were really tough on me. I was still regaining my physical energy. I had to do everything in my power to not let my post-illness weakness show. I practically learnt my steps during the shows. I just had the last 3-4 nights to first watch the acts and then try to learn them, prepare my costumes.

I know you hate going on stage without enough rehearsals.
But that's the story of my life. I'm so busy with my films I only get 4-5 nights to rehearse before going on stage. This (The Unforgettable tour) was actually the first time I had a couple of weeks to rehearse. Those were taken away from me. We were all smiling about it.

You must be torn between the anxiety for your father and the ecstacy of dancing live?
I am. My father is such a strong man. And so is my mother. They're both going through his illness and recuperation together. My father is the strongest man I know. He's my source of inspiration.

His faith in the power of healing is so strong. I feel his strength and also the love of all those who have sent their genuine concern. He has gone through his second cycle of chemotherapy and now he's going through his third. It's not easy for us.

Wouldn't you've preferred to stay home at this time?
My father wouldn't allow that. My parents are made of incredible substance. When I was toying with the idea of backing out of the tour they put their foot down. My dad was like, 'No way. Life goes on. There's no way I'll let you take steps back.'

The international press has gone ga-ga over your dancing?
I enjoy dancing and I'm having the time of my life. But I wanted to come back to Mumbai for a while to spend time with my Dad.

If it was London it would be a hopping flight. But from the US, you lose time because you cross the meridian line. So much as I'd like to come back every week from the concerts, I can't. But I just had see Dad.

And this weekend we just had one show. Now we return this weekend to do a show in Houston. We flew in through Shanghai.

How is it dancing with Madhuri Dixit?
For the two of us it's like old times again. We felt we were both back to doing Devdas together. We smiled about it for while.

You hadn't forgotten your Dola re steps?
You know, muscle memory never lets a dancer down. If you're dancer you never forget steps for a song or dance you've done before. When the music plays the body just takes flight. And that's the best way to dance.

Dancing with the whole family…is that a new high?
It's a wonderful experience. We have danced together on screen and also performed together. But we've never been on a concert tour together.

These concerts are special because we're doing them as a family and it's the first concert Abhishek and I are doing after marriage. Even the audiences all over now respond to us as a couple. They keep showering us with blessings and good wishes.

And when we perform to the Guru song you should hear how they coo and clap…You know, when were co-stars I always told Abhishek a world tour is something he must experience.

It's just such a high to connect on such an intimate basis with your audience. In fact for one of my world tours I had even asked my organizers to ask him to come onboard.

He'd say, 'Not yet not yet' And now who would've thought when he's finally ready for his first wotld tour we'd go together as husband and wife.

Your best shared moment during the concerts so far?
After the perforamance at Amsterdam I looked at Abhishek and asked how it felt. And he reminded me that I had urged him to go on stage from long before. 'And now we're on stage as husband and wife, ' he said. That was a memorable moment.

A section of your friends in Mumbai continue to believe the shows aren't doing well?
What do you do? I've spent a entire career fighting off false perceptions about my life and career.

Do you get time to chill in—between performances?
So far I've done four shows. The first two were really hectic for me. I was learning my steps then and there. Even Dola re dola, I learnt my steps on stage.

In San Franscisco I was relaxed for the first time. From there on it has just been awesome. I've about eight entries per show. That's the maximum ever for me. The whole team is putting their best foot forward.

Do you improvise in the programming for each concert?
Well, we added Dola re in the US when Madhuri came on board. Abhishek and I have also added a romantic act. Most of the show is pre-set. But we're modifying it here and there.

As the number of performances increases we're having more and more fun. We're getting more and more interactive with the audience.

You do realize, after the legendary Barrymores, the Bachchans are the first entertainment family to perform together.
Oh my god! Really? You must tell Pa (Amitji) that.

I'd love to make films for Kareena: Saif Ali Khan

By Subhash K Jha

After Being Cyrus Saif is all set to come together with Homi Adjani again.

"But not right away, " warns Saif. "We'll be doing it next year.I'll produce a film And it's not really a period film."

Saif explains, "It would be a period film. But it won't feel like one. By that I mean it'd be very contemporary in terms of actions and emotions. But in order to make those actions and emotions credible the plot will be set in the past. Part of my character might have some thugi traits. But I don't play a thug, as defined in the history books."

In addition Saif has also said yes to Karan Johar film to be directed by Rensil d'Silva and Sriram Raghavan's Agent Vinod.

Saif is going to star with Kareena in both these films.

"I'd love to make films for Kareena and my sister Soha. But I don't have to star in all my productions. See, initially the whole idea was to give myself a chance to produce films and do the roles I wasn't being offered.

Now when I'm in my first three production being directed by Imtiaz Ali, Sriram Raghavan and Homi Adjania I don't mind playing just the producer in future."

Saif's new home much larger and spacious, is also ready.

"It was a big headache, getting proper permissions. I got a wonderful architect Renu Cheniani doing up the place. She had earlier done up my office and I loved what she had done. I needed a larger home. The kids keep coming home to stay."

Marriage, for me won’t take very long: Sameera Reddy

Q. One quality you would like your man to possess?
A. There is not one, but far too many qualities. My wish list is quite big!

Q. And they are…
A. He should be confident and very sure of himself. He should be fantastic at his job and also as hardworking as I am. Then he should love to work out and should have very good family values. And most important, he should smell very good and be a real good soul!

Q. He would be from Bollywood or outside?
A. I will definitely not go for someone from the film industry. I want someone from outside.

Q. You go for internal or external beauty?
A. He should be beautiful inside out. Well, I guess that matters the most.

Q. He should be brainy or brawny?
A. Definitely brainy.

Q. Is a sense of humour a must?
A. Well, yes, I won’t miss on that one either. That way he can keep me entertained in the most boring situations.

Q. How important would calls and SMSes be in your relationship?
A. Well, yes, it’s very important. But I would like him to call me more than I do!

Q. What do you think of metro-sexual men?
A. Well, they are just okay but they shouldn't overdo that thing. They shouldn’t end up being girly.

Q. How long would you wait to take your relationship to the next level?
A. Next level, as in marriage, for me won’t take very long. The moment I see him for the first time I would know this is it. He is the one and won’t keep waiting after that. - Pratik Maheshwari

Age is not an issue between me and Ranbir: Bipasha Basu

While most Bollywood stars do everything they can to appear cool, professional and squeaky-clean, diligently concealing all their nasty little secrets, Bipasha Basu appears wholly unconcerned by controversy.

Ever keen to talk about her breakdowns, her highs and lows, her fantasies and her boyfriend John Abraham, many would say she's built a career on titillating public confession.

But she's also an increasingly fine and award-winning performer. It's another story that she hasn't won many awards but she definitely has won rewards even for her special appearances for lighting a 'beedi' or being a part of 'phoonk de'.

It all goes to show that when Bips is on screen, she is on fire. No wonder she's hot! We ready for some fiery Q & A with Bipasha Basu.

Statutory Warning: The contents are too hot to handle.

Hi Bipasha, long time no see. Where are you now a days?
Yeah that's what! I go in hibernation when I am filming and when my film is about to release I pop out of my igloo.

You are no more an Ajnabee in Bollywood...
I better not be (ha ha ha)

...and you've made a mark for yourself which your filmography proves. But is it time to tell all the leading ladies, Bachna Ae Haseeno?
(Laughs) No yaar. I am too lost in my own space to say that. My survival technique is that the audience loves me and I have a direct interaction with them. I guess, I'm liked and that's why I'm here.

And the other interesting aspect of Bachna Ae Haseeno is also the fact that you are the senior most and highly experienced from the lot. As a teacher, what did you learn from the new bunch of students?
They are hardly students. You know what happens. When I started off acting I had come with no experience in the films, but all these new comers are actually not new comers because they come with so much of preparation for being in films that they end up knowing more than what I've learnt in the last seven years. So they are as experienced as me and a person like Ranbir, he knows way too much for sure.

I have to say this. But it's quite unlucky for John that he is not the lucky boy in this film, it's Ranbir Kapoor. Did it make the 25-year-old Ranbir uncomfortable while filming romantic and intimate scenes with a 29-year-old Bipasha in the film?
No, not really because we are similar minded people and at the end of the day you're an actor. You've come to do your job and you do it.

It really helps on the contrary because when you have some kind of an equation with your co-star and you're on great talking terms and a friend, then the chemistry is better as it shows on screen, rather than working with a person you don't get along with. Age has nothing to do with it.

You've already won the hearts of thousands by winning the Race in the U.K. Will Bachna Ae Haseeno win the race in similar fashion too?
I do wish that Bachna Ae Haseeno is widely watched because it is actually a very nice and an easy film to watch. It's a kind of film where we talk about and celebrate love, which is an emotion that everyone can easily identify with, and especially today's youth will be easily able to identify with because it could be their story too.

There are other USP's to the film too. The music is great; there are good looking people, great styling, excellent locations, and above all a fantastic story, which I think is a winner at the end of the day. It's a story that you follow.

After Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal and No Smoking in which you did a special appearance, any plans of working with John Abraham again.
We will see if something interests us. We working together is never a plan you know. We really don't plan it. Our way of thinking is very different and our choice of cinema is different. So if we really agree on one thing we will do it but I think the best thing to do is to work less together (laughs). I believe in that.

I don't know whether you know this or not but August 2 will now be officially celebrated as a Bollywood Day in the U.S. after the mega success of the Unforgettable Tour. Are you shocked?
For a change, I am. But I don't know. It's quite a strange thing. I don't even understand friendship day, mothers day, fathers day, etc. For me, friends and parents are forever.

You cannot deny a relationship and definitely when you talk of Bollywood, it is my ambition, my work and my work place. I cannot deny it on every other day, so I don't know what to do on one particular day like a Bollywood Day. If there is a festival organized around Bollywood worldwide, it's an interesting concept.

Are you particular as far as screen space is concerned when you are a part of a big film like Dhoom 2 with big actors and a film like Bachna Ae Haseeno where the only big actor is 'you'?
No. Sometimes people do crap when you are three hours in the film and some person comes in for twenty minutes and steals the thunder. So screen space has definitely never been my outlook.

If you see my work profile, when you do multistarrer, the fun is that they are such a number of good exciting talents all put together in one film. It's just that how you leave your mark behind which matters. There is no competition. It's what you do is important even for a few minutes. Length is not an issue.

We are nearing our Independence Day in ten days. Any message for all the Indians across the globe?
Independence Day is highly significant for all Indians, whether they are in India or living abroad because it is for this day that our country was free and we could take up what we wanted to.

Today, we are who we are because of August 15. I just fell that we should be patriotic towards our country and contribute in the progress of our country in which ever possible way.

This year I am going to spread a little bit of happiness by releasing our film Bachna Ae Haseeno on the Independence Day.

Why should one go and watch Bachna Ae Haseeno on August 15?
I think Bachna Ae Haseeno should be seen by any person who celebrates love, who thinks that love is important, who wants to fall in love and who is in love.

Being a non smoker, you've somehow got attracted to beedi's and cigarettes. When are we going to see you next jalaile a beedi or phoonk de?
(laughs) Nicely worded. As far as the song is concerned, I am right now pretty happy with my 'Lucky Boy' yaar. I'm done with the smoke for the time being.

Esha Deol has a lot of potential: Shiney Ahuja

With Hijack, you open your account in the year 2008…how does it feel?
It feels good because for the last six months, I have been waiting to open this account (laughs). Finally the wait is over and Hijack is releasing.

From the looks of it, Hijack seems like an action packed thriller…Could you tell us a little bit about the film?
Hijack is an action film but it's also a film about relationships that exist and relationships that get formed in the time period during which this incident happens. It talks about how different bonds of love, friendship and enmity rule your emotions and make you do things which you would normally not do.

So what is your character in the film?
I play a maintenance chief of a small airport in Chandigarh. There is something that has happened in his past for which he doesn't know whom to blame, himself or circumstances. It is this past incident because of which he has become another person.

But even when people do change, their core remains the same and in his core, he is a fighter. He is a person who doesn't give up. That is somehow his biggest asset. It is this trait which helps him when he is confronted with a situation. The film is about a Hijack and it's his daughter who is on the plane.

What he does to get his daughter out is the basic premise of the film and how his instincts play during the whole incident is something you need to watch.

Audiences usually associate you with more performance based and intense characters but here you also get to do some heavy duty action. Do you think the audiences would be excited to see this new avatar of Shiney?
Well…I hope so (smiles). To be frank, I am not looking at any conscious image makeover because most of my roles besides being intense have also been really challenging.

I am quite fortunate that very early in my career I have got to play characters with so many shades. My directors and writers have trusted me with such roles. As for Hijack, the script came my way and I really liked it and happened to do it.

Hijack has some heavy duty action sequences. Could you tell us about some of the stunts and how was the experience shooting them. Also did you take any special training for the stunts?
I had to hang from a chopper for about 7 days.

I am not sure what kind of training you can take for that except make sure that you exercise and have strong arms and shoulders (laughs). Fortunately, with God's grace everything went well.

Hijack has 2 leading ladies, Esha Deol and newcomer Kaveri Jha. So whom are you paired opposite?
I am paired opposite Kaveri Jha, a new girl. Esha plays a pivotal role in the film when the Hijack takes place. However, I would say there is chemistry between everyone in the film.

There is a beautiful chemistry between me and my daughter, there is a chemistry between me and the hijackers which is a cat and mouse kind of game happening. There is also chemistry between Esha and me, Kaveri and me and even me and the passengers.

So in that sense there is a lot of chemistry in the film (laughs).

How has it been working with Esha?
Truly Wonderful. She is an actress who has a lot of potential. After what I know of the film industry based on my years spent here, I truly believe that today how successful you are is based on the choice of films you make and not just how well you act.

So I would say that this is a good choice that Esha has made and hope she continues doing such good work in the future too.

Have you done most of the stunts in the film yourself?
Yes, I have done all the stunts in the film myself

Are you a major action film lover and which is your favorite action flick?
My all time favorite action flick is True Lies.

When you say Hijack, the first thing that comes to your mind is the 9 /11 attack on the twin towers or even the Indian plane which was hijacked and taken to Afghanistan. Does the film show any instances which bear similarity to what happened during any of these incidents?
Nothing at all

Coming to your other projects, what's next after Hijack?
There is Har Pall with Preity Zinta directed by Jahnu Barua. It's a romantic film with some light moments. It should be out sometime in October or November.

Is it true that you are also planning a biker film?
Yes that's true but it's too early to talk about it…things have to still fall in place. Right now I am too occupied with the promotions of Hijack.

Shiney you had a good last year (Bhool Bhulaiya, Metro and critical acclaim in Khoya Khoya Chand ) yet we see so less of you and never hear you signing multi-film deals like some of your colleagues. Why so?
I am a sucker for scripts. If I get 3 fantastic scripts I'll sign them. I don't want to commit myself to any sort of project where the scripts are not in place. For me scripts are most important factor.

Besides, I don't think Aamir or Shah Rukh or Salman have signed any 3 film deal. So there are lots of people who have not signed such deals. In fact the biggest stars in the country have not signed any such deal and I am sure they have their reasons for doing so.

You have done exceptionally well in serious films, gangster flicks, action flicks, political drama and even a love story. With comedy being the flavor of the season, when do we Shiney making the audiences laugh?
Very soon, in my next film Har Pall.

With so many new talented directors emerging, which one of them has managed to catch your fancy in recent times? Any of them you would like to work with in the near future?
Amongst the young directors who have caught my fancy, is Imtiaz Ali…he is a friend of mine as well…then there is Sriram Raghavan who made Johnny Gaddaar.

Lastly give us 3 good reasons to watch Hijack which opens on Aug 29.
If you want to watch a hi-octane action flick, then Hijack is the film to watch If you are looking for a film which has very simple and basic emotions (like a love between a father and daughter) and see how far a man would go for the sake of his daughter, Hijack is the film to watch. Finally, if you want to watch a fabulous song on screen 'Aksar'…you should watch Hijack.

A. Yes, I do. I wear some or the other accessories in my daily life.

Q. Which is the latest perfume that you bought?
A. My latest addiction is a perfume called Princess.

Q. Which colours do you think are a must in a wardrobe?
A. I love wearing black. I am just addicted to black color. Most of my wardrobe is filled with black clothes only.

Q. What do you have to say about short and skimpy clothes?
A. I think people who can carry it off well should only wear it. I personally think that I look hot in skimpy and short dresses. It’s all because I know I carry it off well.

Q. Any fashion tips for our readers?
A. I will only say wear whatever you are comfortable in and nothing else. One has to be comfortable in whatever he or she is wearing. - Pratik Maheshwari

I'm taking John on a Holiday: Bipasha Basu

By Subhash K Jha

Bipasha has fallen in love all over again. And this time it's for keeps. On a recent shooting spell in Italy she fell in love with the small idyllic town of Capri and decided there and then to come back for a holiday to this paradisical spot with John.

"It's so restful and lovely. It's not a place to work. It's a place to holiday. And I'm taking John."

Bipasha feels the hotel she stayed in at Capri was one of the best experiences of her life. "It's called JK Place.

The biggest celebrities of the world visit there. I had the best room overlooking the ocean. It was the most gorgeous suite I had ever stayed in. I didn't want to work. I wanted to call my boyfriend over for a holiday."

Otherwise Italy was great fun."We finished work very fast everyday and went sightseeing in a big group to Rome. Capri was very cute and small. We were shooting in a villa.

We were all together all the time. I remember we couldn't get any chicken in Italy. There was other kinds of meat which I don't eat. When I finally got chicken I was so happy. Me, who's almost a diehard vegetarian."

Bipasha is now getting her house renovated and will plan this holiday as soon as John returns from Philadelphia were he's shooting for Kabeer Khan's New York.

"John has been shooting with Neil Nitin Mukesh, while I've rented a place close to where I live. I'll shift to that place while my house is being renovated. It took me a while to find the rented place.

At the moment the rented place is being done up, so I can move into it while renovation starts in my house.I'm waiting for the other place to be ready.

But in the meanwhile I'm staying in my own place without a bed in a makeshift corner while the workers get busy hammers and tongs. So you see, I'm not in a very happy state of mind. A good time to take a holiday."

Indian clothes are even costlier than the ego of Indian designers: Bhairavi Goswami

Q. How would you like to define fashion?
A. Fashion for me is feel good factor with clothes one wear. It has to be well fitting outfits which look beautiful and make you feel free.

Q. Where do you generally buy your dresses from?
A. I like to buy them from outside India only. I feel that Indian clothes are even costlier than the ego of Indian designers. I simply can’t afford them.

Q. Which brand do you prefer the most?
A. There are many brands that I like but I love Karen Miller the most. And not to forget Kwali for their animal prints.

Q. Do you enjoy fashion shows?
A. Yeah. Sometimes.

Q. Who is your favourite fashion designer?
A. No one from India as because their design and price for the designs are quite in contradiction. A rupees ten thousand sari does never look like they worth the money.

Q. The costliest outfit you own…
A. It’s a Moskino.

Q. Your preferable party wears?
A. It’s only salwar suit because it looks very feminine and at the same time very regal, too.

Q. What do you prefer to wear at home?
A. I feel free in track suits only.

Q. Do you have any preference of colour?
A. I look for clothes of warm colours only. But there is no particular colour as such for which I go for shopping.

Q. Any fashion tips for our readers?
A. You may wear whatever you wish but please don’t forget to add a little charm of smile with your outfits. No branded or costly dress can help you look better if you lose in vivacity. - Rajnee Gupta

I share an emotional bond with the Deols: Priyanka Chopra

Futuristic film Love Story 2050 and the futuristic character of Priyanka in the film – both the futuristic matters fail paving Priyanka’s path to a better future.

And the babe of Bollywood is back to take a chance with her rather look-real character in the Vijeta Films’ soon-to-release film Chamku. Rajnee Gupta shared time with the actress to know about her character, the film and of course little more...

Q. What the film Chamku is all about?
A. Chamku is quite a realistic film. Every audience will relate one or the other stage of his life to the film. It’s not a usual glamorous film at all. Songs of the film are also very melodious. Whenever I travel in my car I play two songs from the film. One of them is Aaja milke… which is simply mind-boggling.

Q. After Kismat and Barsaat, it’s now time for Chamku. How do you feel about this Bobby-Priyanka trilogy?
A. I started my career with Vijeta Films. My first film, Big Brother, which got released in the last year, was with Sunny Deol.

I still can’t forget the day I received my first check as an actor from the Vijeta. I have an emotional bondage with the banner and I am really happy to have the chance to work with Vijeta once again.

Q. What about Bobby?
A. Actually this is my fourth film with Bobby. He is very cool guy and has worked really well in Chamku. He has justified with his complex character of Chamku. I think people will accept and love his character in the film.

Q. What about your character in Chamku?
A. The name of my character in the film is Shubhi. She is the daughter of a rich man and a teacher at a kindergarten. She leaves all the fortunes of her father and spends time in teaching children as she enjoys doing so.

Her life takes a dramatic change once Bobby enters her life. I cannot say anything more about my character as it will mar the mystery the character carries.

Q. Any special preparation for the character?
A. I didn’t need any such thing. I have very few scenes as a teacher. Most of my scenes are with Bobby, so I didn’t need to go for any special preparation.

Q. You experience a lot with your look in each of your films. Have you tried any such thing in this film, too?
A. Not really. You will see me in salwar kurta after a long span. At the same time you will see me in sari also. It’s a complete Indian look. I have kept a simple look with shifon sari because my character in the film is that of a school teacher.

Q. How much you had to teach Bobby?
A. (Laughing) I am a teacher to the children of nursery standard only.

Q. How is the experience of working with children?
A. I have a long sequence with children in this film and working with them gave me quite a lasting memorable moments.

Actually I love children. I enjoyed spending days with them. We used to dance together, have food together and sometimes we went for traveling around, too.

Q. Any memorable moment?
A. Yeah. It was the shooting of a song at Bobby’s Lonavla cottage. We spent two days over there and the fun was in booking our own hills (laughing).

It looked like having mahabhoj every time we sat for having meal as because all of us used to have food together. We had a party over there after the shooting. It’s really memorable. - Rajnee Gupta

Don't trust me blindly Katrina: Akshay Kumar

By Subhash K Jha

The success of Singh is Kinng has mellowed and sobered-down Akshay Kumar like never before. What next? He realizes the enormity of the responsibility on his shoulder.

"Bas aur nahin chahiye, bahut mil gaya, " he says gratefully, as boxoffice collections for Singh pour in from everywhere. Sportingly doing away with his new precondition of interviews on the email Akshay asks me to do a one-to-one chat.

Another hit, I guess. Katrina Kaif tells me she just follows you into projects?
Kya baat hai. Thank you very much, Katrina. But please don't trust me blindly. I still have a lot to learn about scripts and cinema. I make a lot of mistakes. I hope when I make a mistake in selecting a script, you Katrina are not in that film.

Why a film on Sardarjis?
When I was younger my Dad and I would have endless discussions on movies. One of the things that bothered him was, why were Sardarjis ridiculed in our films? My father's concern remained somewhere in my subconscious.

That's how Singh is Kinng was born. If I produce any more films it would be about issues that I've grown up with and believe in. Singh is Kinng is a tribute to my Punjabi community.

Why are some people objecting to it?
The topmost Sikh organizations have cleared the film. Unho ne to bilkul sar-aankhon par picture ko bithaya hai. On the opening day they were distributing sweets in some theatres. In Mumbai a Sikh MLA booked the entire theatre and invited any and everyone to come and watch. The only pre-condition was that everyone had to be in turbans.

But the Sikh Federation disrupted the film's screening on Friday.
Yes it did happen for an hour in Amritsar. The problem was solved immediately. Those who were protesting hadn't even watched the film.

This is your first controversial film.
I don't know how that happened. I never do any film that would hurt any community. If you've watched Singh Is Kinng you'd know how misplaced these protests are.

Akshay, you're living life King size
Ha ha, you can say that again. But like I keep saying these days the real king is Mr Bachchan, and no one else. Some people don't like my saying this. But it's the truth. Whatever I'm today is because of the love and support of my fans. Beyond that I don't want to be the king.

Super-stardom is a slippery status.
And I don't want it. I'm not a superstar. I'm not saying this for effect. I'm only here to entertain people. I keep telling my wife I don't want to be either no.1 or no.2. I just want to be alive and kicking in the film industry. By the grace of God, this industry has given me immense love and affection. I've got much more than I deserve.

All your recent films have been hits, except Tashan which we won't mention.
Oh you can mention it. I'm not the least ashamed of Tashan. I loved my role of Bachchan Pandey. It was a great role. I want to thank Aditya Chopra for giving me that film.

Why should I disown a film just because it hasn't done well? If I'm getting the credit for Singh is Kinng then I also want to stand by Tashan which may not have done that well. But it got me a lot of appreciation.

Do you feel a whole lot of pressure trying to sustain the boxoffice success that has come your way?
It is a large responsibility on my head and shoulders. Until the day before the release of Singh is Kinng I was so tense I had stopped talking to my wife. I become edgy before every release. But this time it was worse.

So many factors are linked to Singh is Kinng. It's the first controversial film of my career. Most important of all, it's my first home production.

I've dedicated the film to my late secretary Mr Vikas Bali and to my father. They'd be so proud of Singh is Kinng.

It was very gracious of you to dedicate your film to your secretary.
I did what I felt to be instinctively right.Mr Bali was not just my secretary. He was a father- figure after my father. His wife didn't know about the dedication. She called and got very emotional when she saw the film. Today Mr Bali's brother looks after my work.

You always told me you'd never get into production. What made you change your mind?
There's a time and place for everything. I've been in this film industry for 18 years. When I got the title Singh Is Kinng I wanted to make the film in partnership with my friend Vipul Shah.

I identify very closely with the North- Indian family values. There was a time when my parents, sister and I wouldn't miss a a single Hindi film. That habit continues. I don't miss a single film even today.

My family's commitment to watching films every Saturday was so strong that we would skip our dinner on those evening so could afford Gurukripa's samosas, popcorn and icecream at Rupam Cinema (now closed down).

How do you find the time now?
I don't know how I do it. But I've to find the opportunity to watch every film. The ones I miss I make a note of in the diary and then catch up with later. I had missed Cash and Race. I watched them recently.

Will you be producing more films?
If I like a script as much as Singh is Kinng why not? If I don't I won't. It's not as if I've tasted blood and want more.

Now do you think Chandni Chowk To China will be as big a hit as Singh is Kinng?
That's a scary thought. And I don't want to think about it.That's my autobiographical film. It's the story of my life. I always wanted to put my own journey from Delhi to Bangkok into a film.

Are you taking credit for the story?
Nahin nahin. Not at all. I've no interest or fascinatiuon for taking credit for anything apart from acting. Full credit for writing the story of Chandni Chowk To China goes to Sridhar Raghavan.

I told him my own story of a waiter from Chandni Chowk who goes abroad and learns martial arts. Sridhar added about 80 percent of his own ideas to my story.

Katrina has a much smaller role than you in Singh is Kinng.
It's not about big or small role. It all about a hit film. In Bhool Bhulaiya I came in at interval point. The film was a hit and we all got credit for it. All I know is, audiences have their own criteria for liking a film. Many times I haven't liked one of my films. But it has been a hit.

But Singh is Kinng has been liked by critics and the audience.
I am grateful Since this is my last interview for a while I want to fold my hands and thank everyone. Kahan se kahan pahucha diya mujhe aur film ko.

Some insecure people keep spreading rumours about me: Tanushree Dutta

Tanushree Dutta, the beautiful and glamorous actress is ready to mesmerize everyone with her new and different journo film, Saas, Bahu and Sensex. The glam-gal is all set for her new release under the production of Warner Bros. She speaks more on her film, relationships and her desire to put a full top to all kind of controversies.

A. I don’t actually care for any comment. There are some people who feel insecure and start spreading all these kind of news. I work with full dedication and don’t care what others say.

People just want to take away all the credit for themselves. So many things keep happening and I can’t keep reacting to all.

There’s always something or the other being written about me in media. I just read all those rubbish articles in the newspaper and throw it away.

But there are some genuine people who know better about professionalism and don’t get insecure. Working with them is very wonderful and I would like to work with them again and again.

Q. How was it working with the entire cast and especially under the banner of internationally acclaimed Warner Brothers?
A. It was excellent. It is their first release in India with an Indian film and they are very wonderful to work with. They give great support as a producer. They are very neutral in handling all kinds of situations.

A. Warner Bros. have done a lot of Google search and wanted the kind of actors who have commercial value. They found my profile, liked it and approached me. At first I hesitated a little before accepting the film. The film being an off beat one made me a little apprehensive to go with it.

But then I decided that I should try films with different journo and accepted the offer. I found it a good chance to try something different and since it was a kind of a life time opportunity, I decided to take it up.

Q. Any special message we are going to get in this film?
A. The film has a very light treatment and is a comedy. The movie shows the changing face of the society we live in today. The women are getting smart and taking part in all kinds of work. Basically it is an overview of our society.

Q. How much of the daily soap effect is there in this film?
A. A little bit of it, you can say. It has been made in a sporty way with lot of comic sense in it. There is a bit of spoof in that.

Q. What is the USP of the film?
A. The story. It is something which is not done before. All I can say is that everything is interesting and all the characters are adorable.

Q. You expectations with this film?
A. Expectations are high and I want that the film gets noticed and appreciated by all. I am 100% sure that a large section will appreciate the film. There is no big star in this film but still I am sure people will like it.

Q. What kind of roles you think you are comfortable in?
A. I want to play different kind of roles. I like experimenting so I would try out different things to prove myself. I would like to do those things which give me free space to show my capacity and my talent and at the same time allow me to do new things in my own way.

Q. Your up coming projects…
A. I am doing Rama the Saviour with Khali. It’s a children’s film which is getting released this September and then I am doing Asthavinayak’s Run Bhola Run with Govinda and it is too early to speak about that film right now. - Sabir Rahman

Big B and Deepika Padukone are the fittest stars: Govinda

Q. You have been for a long time now in Bollywood. Which were your best days of your professional career?
A. Starting from Shola Aur Shabnam to 1997 released film Bade Miya Chote Miya, was the best period of my life as during that period I did some good roles and that too with innocence.

Q. Now too the innocence is visible in the roles you play. How do you manage to treasure that innocence?
A. As one takes care of his/her house so that it looks attractive to him/her as well as others. Likewise one should also make sure to regularly clean his/her mind thinking of Saraswati Maata. I also do the same thing.

Q. Now-a-days you are known to divert your attention more towards spiritualism; any special reason behind it?
A. I am moving towards spiritualism due to my mother. For the start, I was very hot-tempered and had to indulge in fights.

But once I got inspired by my mother’s teachings and became her student, life changed for me. I learnt a lot of good things from my mother. At the same time I learnt that those who are hot tempered get to meet people who are much more hot tempered than him/her.

Q. At the start of your career you portrayed a lot of serious characters. But since around ten years you are mostly seen in comedy flicks. Why?
A. Frankly speaking, I was tired of portraying serious roles. I started working in the industry when I was 21 years old.

Before that, since I was fourteen I have to help my mother in household works like, sweeping, washing clothes, etc. I have worked a lot throughout my life. Due to this I started going through a lot of stress and comedy brought a new freshness in my life.

Q. How do you manage a brilliant timing in comedy with your co-stars which off course is a very important aspect in comedy?
A. See, in comedy more than an actor, a director has to be good in his work. If the director is good then you can even succeed in doing a comedy act with a lamppost.

Q. Amongst all the comedy flicks you have worked in until now, who has been your favourite co-star?
A. I have enjoyed working with all the stars whether he is Kader Khan, Anupam Kher, Satish Kaushik, Satish Shah, Chunky Pandey, Shakti Kapoor or even Karishma Kapoor. Whoever works with me always gives their 100 percent. Even my recent pairing with Salman Khan was appreciated by the viewers.

Q. Which film would you rate the best amongst the various movies you have done under the direction of David Dhawan?
A. My favourite films are Deewana Mastana and Swarg.

Q. Which has been the toughest character to play in your career?
A. I haven’t got any of such character yet.

Q. When would we see you acting in a serious cinema?
A. Not until I am satisfied that the film is going to be a super hit.

Q. There is known to be two comedy schools in Bollywood now-a-days; one run by Priyadarshan whereas other by David Dhawan. How would you differentiate between the two?
A. (laughs) See, the cheque that one gets from both the sides is the same. Their faces too match with each other. To be frank, when it comes to comedy cinema, South always has an upper hand. Even the films David has made have been inspired by South movies. The only difference has been in the way the script has been treated.

Q. Which is your favourite comedy scene?
A. I love watching all the scenes from Dilip Kumar starrer Kohinoor and Ram Aur Shyam.

Q. Whom would you name your three all time favourite stars?
A. Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra. Dilip Kumar is such an institute of acting that anyone who copies him can become a superstar.

Dhramendra is my favourite hero and I have got a lot of respect for Amitabh Bachchan. Even today he is very active as an actor. It wouldn’t be wrong to call him the gem of India.

Q. Have you ever copied anyone?
A. I copy everyone. From whomsoever I get the right energy, I copy from there.

Q. Today you have got everything. Any such thing which you still desire for?
A. I haven’t got anything yet. Infact I think that I have just started my career.

Q. It’s been said that the people who do comedy are very happy in life. What do you have to say about the same?
A. It’s very true. But some times you come across some kind of people who joke about your happiness and then you have to show him some of your punches. It’s good to be nice and happy but only till someone else doesn’t use your nature in a wrong way.

Q. According to you, who are the fittest actor and actress in Bollywood?
A. Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone are the fittest stars in Bollywood. Even Akshay Kumar is very fit but Amitabhji being my favourite; I would like to give him extra marks. - Rajnee Gupta

No ill will towards Shilpa Shetty: Akshay Kumar

Akshay Kumar has come a long way from the time when he was an assistant to photographer Jayesh Sheth in the late 80's long before he embarked on his path to stardom, a fact which he has not forgotten at all, unlike others of his ilk who tend to get a bout of amnesia when they taste success in a big way.

Like Rajanikant down South, success has not spoilt him at all, in spite of the fact that he proved to be the box office king last year by delivering as many as four super duper hits - Welcome, Bhool Bhulaiya, Namaste London and Heyy Babyy, Akshay continues to be a down to earth munda, even now after having churned out one more earth shattering hit in the form of Sing Is Kinng.

Akshay is quite excited about the fact that his latest release- Singh Is Kinng, in which he once again plays to the gallery and has been romantically teamed with Katrina Kaif who he calls his lucky mascot, has grossed around 140 ctrores at the box office.

Incidentally it is hat trick with Katrina Kaif withy whom he had delivered two hits earlier - Namaste London and Welcome.

The thorough gentleman that he is, when I meet him for this interview at a South Mumbai five star hotel, Akshay is irked when he is asked whether he has a big hand in promoting the career of Katrina Kaif "It is belittling Katrina if I am asked this question.

Why don't journalists ask Katrina whether she has had a hand in promoting my career, especially since I have got two hits when I acted with her?

Each and every actor who is working in a film is responsible for the success of a film."

Akshay has never been one of the quintessential Bollywood bravado heroes who would kiss and tell and embarrass the women in their life.

Though he and Shilpa Shetty were in love once and had fallen out too, he does not harbour any ill will towards her or detest her.

"If I am offered a good script which appeals to me, I am ready to work with Shilpa Shetty. Why should I not do a film with her?

Over the last several years since I had started my career, I have delivered quite a few hits with Shilpa including Main Khiladi Tu Anadi. I would love to work with her".

Akshay confesses that he had great expectations from the film Singh Is Kinng which had been released all over the world with as many as 1800 prints.

"I am a Punjabi from Amritsar and hence I did not have any difficulty to get into the skin of the character of Mr Happy Singh that I played in the film. The character is basically me. Anees Bazmee who has written and directed the film wrote this after watching me for nearly a month.

I can relate to the character in real life. I had actually suggested the title to Vipul Shah after I saw a truck which had the lines Singh Is King written in the back, at a time when neither the script nor the title had been even thought of."

Akshay confesses that he shares a great chemistry with producer Vipul Shah who has earlier directed him films like Aankhen, which incidentally marked Vipul's debut as a director, Waqt and Namaste London.

Akshay unequivocally blames the media for all the veiled speculations that he had sabotaged the show "The Unforgettables" which had the Bachchans, with Preity Zinta, Ritesh Deshmukh, Shiamak Davar and Vishal- Shekhar.

"Why should I think of sabotaging their shows? I have worked in seven films with Mr Bachchan, who is like the pillar of this industry. I am often asked who the king of the film industry is and I have always replied that it is none other than Mr Amitabh Bachchan.

You cannot discount the fact that he has been in this industry for the last 35 to 40 years. All the rest of us whether it is Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan or for that matter I may claim to be kings but are not".

Akshay has a sound advice to youngsters who want to follow him as far as physique and fitness are concerned.

"I have always believed that if you cannot give at least one hour every day to your own body, you should just kill yourself."

Akshay adds that the best way to live life king size is to have a positive attitude in life which will help one go a long way.

Akshay is one of the few heroes in Bollywood who has always made it a point to maintain a well toned boy though he has never bothered to go in for 6 pack abs, like say Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om.

Akshay spends his evenings whenever he is shooting outdoors by jogging to his heart's content and does not indulge in drinking bouts at all, unlike most of his colleagues in the industry.

Akkshay knows how to take a pot shot at himself.

"If tomorrow, I find myself out of work as an actor, I would not be bothered at all because I can always take up the job of editing, since I am well known for chopping off all my co-actor's scenes in films in which I am working", quips Akshay with a poker face when asked about his penchant to edit his co-actor's scenes in all his films.

Akshay says. "I was happy when I entered the industry almost two decades ago. I am happy today too. I am not insecure of my co-actors. There is room for every one at the top.

When the media asks me whether I consider any other star as my competitor, I tell them that I am not in competition with any star on the scene today but am sacred of only the new comers, who are breezing in on the scene nowadays.

They keep me on my toes. I would not call myself King just because I play the title role in Singh Is Kinng, because the title is too heavy for me to carry." - Jyothi Venkatesh

I never felt that I'm more senior to Prachi: Shahana Goswami

The moment when people started 'knowing' her as Payal Gandhi, she announced that she is Gina Fernandes. And the moment her name was catching on, she said 'Rock On' with Debbie!

We are sure that you must be off tracked about who is this 'she' we are talking about. She is none other than Payal aka Gina aka Debbie aka ….the one and only Shahana Goswami!

Onscreen she was the woman responsible for Arjun Rampal's success in the season's super duper blockbuster Rock On. But off screen, she has been hugely responsible for many films like Yun Hota To Kya Hota, Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. etc. We caught up with this firebrand actress and Man! all that we could say is Rock On Shahana!

From your first film, Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota to now Rock On and Ru Ba Ru, how has the film industry treated you?
It may sound very clichéd but I believe I have been very lucky mainly because I started very young. I filmed for Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota, Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. and Ru Ba Ru when I was in college.

And once I graduated, I dwelled more into films and did Tera Kya Hoga Johnny? with Mr. Sudhir Mishra and Firaaq with Nandita Das. And then Rock On happened.

In short, I have done a wide variety of films just as I had intended to. I am really grateful and glad that I got to do so many interesting roles and characters. Actually, I would say I'm pleasantly surprised as I got a lot more than I thought and things that matched by taste and sensibilities. I think I have just been very lucky.

How did you bag the role in Rock On?
Shaanu Sharma and Simran are my friends and they were in the middle of casting for Rock On at that time. They happened to suggest my name to Gattu (Abhishek Kapoor director of Rock On), and I went ahead to meet him. I auditioned for the film, later I got a call, and there I was in the film.

How was it playing a role opposite the stylish and hot Arjun Rampal?
It was great. Luckily, we knew each other from my Honeymoon Travels…days and since it was a complete outdoor shoot we interacted a lot regarding work and a lot of other things as well.

In spite of meeting him in a new space, he never let me feel that I am new or anything lesser than him. He always treated me as an equal; we would discus our characters, scenes, our history, our equation, and our relationship in terms of the film.

Arjun encouraged me throughout the making of this film. He is full of surprises and often corrected me in the right places. It was a team effort and I think we managed to pull it off very well. He's been overtly generous and sweet.

Farhan Akhtar a director and now an actor how was your equation with him?
Very good. Considering, we all come from similar background and sensibility we got along very well. Farhan is fantastic person and an even fantabulous actor, which once you see Rock On you will completely agree with.

It does not always happen that if a person is a good director he knows how to self-execute it on screen but Farhan breaks all paths.

The best thing about him is, in spite of being super talented he is also very humble about everything and his sincerity in work shows. I have a great rapport with him.

This film is a debut film for Farhan and Prachi being a senior in terms of acting how did it feel?
(Laughs) I think it is not fair to be so technical about things. Just because someone has not faced the camera that does not mean they do not know how to act.

I think Farhan, whether he on celluloid or not, he is far more experienced since he was a director before being an actor. Similarly, Prachi has acted on television before and has shouldered such a huge show all alone, which is comment worthy.

So I have never felt that I'm more senior to them in any way, I always felt like the baby of the family and I still hold that post. I'm a lot inexperienced than any of them.

So what's your role in Rock On?
I play Arjun Rampal's girlfriend who eventually becomes his wife. My character is named Debbie. The interesting feature about this character is her existence along with the journey of the band members. She was with them when they were together and even ten years later.

Everyone changes quite drastically after time but she is the only female character who shares this journey with them. Since Prachi is there only in the present. You see a stark difference in her, and she is not this quintessential heroine who is always sweet and loving.

She is a very practical woman; you see how life and time has changed her due to circumstances. Its not melodramatic, it is just how drudgery of life changes you that for me was an interesting graph to play out as an actor.

Was Gattu (Abhishek Kapoor) strict with you or anyone?
Not at all, Abhishek gives lot of space to his actors. And he's very clear about what he wants.

At the end of the day when we sit to discuss shots and scenes if there is anything anyone suggests, Gattu will always try to use it if he can. I won't call him a strict director at all; he always lets the rhythm of the actors to take over. I never found him to be a guiding, or pointing or any thing of that sort.

Tell us something about the story and your role in Ru Ba Ru.
Ru Ba Ru is about living in a relationship. Over a period, say about 2 years into any relationship, people start taking each other for granted.

The film is about these two people. And how you tend to get jaded and caught up with everyday of life and you ignore the little things of life that make you happy including the person that you are involved with.

We forget to express our appreciation for that person or love for that person all that in someway hampers relationships in the long run. It is about that one day when you realize the importance of people in your life is seldom known when they are lost.

How would you rate Randeep Hooda as an actor?
I think he is very fine actor and, he has amazing skills and is very knowledgeable about it. Randeep helped me a lot with my work and especially since this was my first film as a lead.

He was very helpful not only with scenes between us but throughout the entire film. He guided me with my speech, intonation, and modulation. And I really think that he will be very successful. Ru Ba Ru will showcase another side to Randeep's personality; you will see a much lighter side of him.

Ganapati bappa morya: Divyanka Tripathi

Q. Do you have a faith on Lord Ganesha? (If not) who do you worship at home?
A. Definitely I do have faith on lord Ganesha.

Q. Are you a regular visitor to Siddhivinayak on every Tuesday?
A. Yeah, I do visit Siddhivinayak almost every Tuesday. Whatever I pray heartily, I get it.

Q. Ganapati puja is going to be held soon. Do you worship Ganapati at home?
A. Yes, I do. When I am in my hometown Bhopal, we do bring Lord Ganesha in our home. It's a ritual that we follow every year.

Q. What is your planning about celebrating ganapati puja this year?
A. This year I will go all over Mumbai with my friends to see Ganapatiji.

Q. Have you been attached to Ganapati puja since childhood? / (if someone is from outside Mumbai) How did you find that celebration in Mumbai for the first time?
A. I am not attached to only Ganapatiji, but to all the lords since childhood. In Mumbai, the puja is mind blowing. Especially during the time of Visarjan, it is great. And I really feel like dancing with the worshippers.

Q. Any special memory about ganapati puja?
A. No, nothing special because each year comes with its special and different charm.

Q. What do you say about the pollution and noise, created in Mumbai during ganapati visarjan?
A. For the noise, I think we should really keep a check. I know that during the time of visarjan, we forget all the things and enjoy a lot. But although we are devotees, still we have to think about our atmosphere.

Q. You must know that Ganapati idols will not be immersed in water this year and instead it has to be earthed. What do you think about that?
A. It's really a great decision, but I think all the people will not go with this. So if we will get any solution from Pandits and apply it, then no one will object.

Q. Which is the song, related to Ganesha puja, that you find most close to your heart?
A. Now, there is no particular song which is close to my heart as Ganapati puja is specially celebrated by Maharastrians. But I love to hear Ganapati Bappa morya, mangal murti morya… -Swati Dey

My love life is in London: Shilpa Shetty

Shilpa Shetty speaks to Subhash K Jha...

So where does your love life with Raj Kundra stand now?
It's not standing.

So where is it sitting?
It's there. He's a huge support. I don't deny his presence. Why should I?

Is this love for keeps?
I'm not God to decide that. I'd expect it to culminate into something permanent. But there's too much speculation about it. Anything I say about my relationship will be misconstrued. As of now my plate is full.

Are you happy in the relationship?
What do you think? Would I be in the relationship if I wasn't happy?

What does Raj think of your movies?
He's a complete movie buff. He sees all my films.

Will he produce a film for you?
No, he's helping me with my film-production plans. He has produced a film before. So he's experienced.

Has Raj taken hold of your life and career?
No. All my vital decisions are still taken by my father. He's 67 and still very strong, touchwood. I keep telling my beautiful mother she has contributed nothing to my looks.

What is the one thing in your life lately that has changed you lately?
The spiritual course at the Oneness University has completely changed my outlook to life. My sister Shamita and I recently attended the Oneness camp. You don't have to belong to any religion to learn from the Oneness course.

I believe life is a learning curve. And I'm learning so much about life. The experience is beyond words. I'm discovering new things about myself. Like Karan Johar's Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham the Oneness course is all about loving your parents.

All my life I've felt whatever I am is because of my parents. And now this course just reaffirms my faith.Soon after I met the founders of the Oneness University Bhagwan and Amma, I got the chance to anchor Bigg Boss.

Bigg Boss is your second stab at Indian television.
That's right. I was a judge on Jhalak Dikhla Jaa and immediately after that I left for London for Big Brother. My job on Big Boss is to interact with the contestants, the inmates in the house.

I'll be their only link with the outside world. Arshad Warsi did it last year on Big Boss. He did a very good job of it. I've been an inmate on Big Brother now I'm the host in Bigg Boss.

I'm traveling back and forth from Mumbai to London shooting for Bigg Boss and Sunny Deol's film The Man.But I'm not complaining.

You're constantly traveling, don't you feel constantly jetlagged?
I do. But I'd rather be busy than sitting at home not working. God's been kind to me.He has kept me busy. Very few actors can claim to be going through their best years after fifteen years in the business I am.

Yes, the constant travelling takes its toll. But I guess you have to do it when you've to.But I'm pretty much based in Mumbai.

But your love life is in London?
Ya, I guess (giggles). I'm very embarrassed. I can safely say now London is and will be my second home. But my family and work is in Mumbai.
